Devs and modders can now freely add AMD’s best upscaling algorithm into games-

Game developers now have unfettered access to AMD’s latest and greatest upscaling technology, FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) 2.2. AMD has made both the API and source code available on its GPUOpen website for all to integrate. That should pave the way for a few more games offering this impressive upscaling technology in 2023.

FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) is a tool we’ve come to rely on for gaming performance over the past year. It’s a universal upscaling algorithm that works on any graphics card and bumps up performance with mostly minimal impact on overall image quality. It’s similar in its aims to tools such as Nvidia’s DLSS or Intel’s XeSS. Every so often, it gets a little better, too, with the latest version 2.2 bringing with it reductions in what AMD calls “High-Velocity Ghosting.”

This ghosting issue was most prevalent in racing games. Unsurprisingly, then, the first three games out of the gate with FSR 2.2 so far have been Forza Horizon 5, F1 22, and Need …

Former Dragon Age lead writer David Gaider pours scorn on EA’s AI dreams- ‘What they took as excitement was really a veiled wail of despair’-

EA sure is keen to start using AI in all its games. So keen that CEO Andrew Wilson can’t stop chatting about it: In March he was envisioning a bleak future where 3 billion people were using it, and just recently he was regaling investors with the news that EA devs apparently have a “hunger” to begin using the tech themselves.

But maybe take Wilson’s words with a grain of salt, because over on Twitter, former Dragon Age lead writer David Gaider had some fierce criticisms of the EA boss and his breathless hosannahs to AI. Responding to Wilson’s comments, Gaider wrote that “the ‘hunger’ referred to here is the allure of a spreadsheet where the labour costs suddenly show as a teeny tiny bar compared to the other bars and a bunch of executives around a table nod and repeat ‘ROI’ and ‘good, yes, good’ over and over again.

“They want you to believe the devs under them are super stoked to work generative AI into their processes,” continued Gaider, “but I assure you what they too…

A Cyberpunk 2077 ‘live-action project’ is on the way-

Having completed a three-year comeback that finally turned it into the game it should have been on launch day, it looks like Cyberpunk 2077 is now headed for television screens. CD Projekt Red announced today that it is working with production company Anonymous Content on a “live-action project” that will tell a brand new story set in Night City.

The project is still in the early development stages and currently doesn’t have a screenwriter, although a search for one is underway. CD Projekt said it’s working “directly” with Anonymous Content Studios’ head of television Garret Kemble and various other executives and producers, and that it is being developed “in close collaboration with the Cyberpunk 2077 creative team.”

Anonymous Content has been around for more than 20 years, during which it’s been involved with a number of television and film projects including True Detective, Schitt’s Creek, The Revenant, 13 Reasons Why, and Random Acts of Flyness. It’s also at least te…

Hopes are high- Starfield rockets to second place in Steam’s global bestsellers list-

Starfield is available for pre-purchase now, and Bethesda’s space RPG is already the number two bestseller on Steam, beneath only Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

The chart is based on revenue, which is what explains why a free-to-play game like CS:GO can sit at the top. On the US chart, Starfield is in third place, with the $399 Steam Deck overtaking it for second, which is again explained by revenue being the deciding factor as opposed to the number of units sold.

Starfield ain’t exactly cheap either, though. The Starfield base edition costs $70, reflecting a recent industry-wide price bump for certain “triple-A” games. There’s also a $100 Digital Premium Edition, which gets you five days of early access, the first story expansion (which they’ve already announced the name of: Shattered Space), some skins, and digital copies of the soundtrack and artbook.

The Starfield Direct, an all-Starfield showcase that followed the broader Xbox Games Showcase on Sunday, clea…

Sorry folks, Hellblade 2’s new trailer doesn’t have the Big Guy in it-

Remember the last Hellblade 2 trailer? It had a really big guy in it. He sort of looked like a zombie except he could talk.

Big Guy isn’t in the latest Hellblade 2 trailer, which Microsoft debuted during its Xbox Games Showcase today. And, honestly, I’m bummed out. What was his deal? Where was he going? Why did he need help? These are the sort of questions the people have been asking since he crawled out of his cave in 2021.

In today’s trailer, Senua is trapped in her own cave. As she approaches a pool in the middle of it, the voices in her head bounce around until the walls start twisting into shapes. The uneasy camera work from the first game returns and moves closer to her as she talks back to a voice that sticks out from the rest: “I know you.”

It’s never made clear who the voice is, and unfortunately I’m pretty sure it’s not Big Guy. Whoever it is, they want Senua to find something by reaching into the pool. When she finally does press her hands into the water…

Starfield’s NPCs keep procedurally jumpscaring players mid-conversation, and now I live in fear-

While NPCs getting bodied in the middle of a chat with your Starfield character is plenty funny, I’ve a far less slapstick thing to be afraid of now. While this hasn’t happened to me yet, now I know it’s only a matter of time. After all, once is chance, twice is a coincidence, three times is a pattern.

The first incident comes from Starfield Reddit user welshscott5, who had an unwelcome visitor lean into view mid-sentence, then drift back into the ether with a look of raw disappointment. Starfield’s NPC expressions can sometimes be uncanny, which makes the surprisingly true-to-life disdain on display here all the more hilarious. Maybe they stole his space sweetroll or something.

I was casually talking to an NPC when this happened, spent about 5 minutes in uncontrollable laughter from r/Starfield

Then there’s this moment from ArduousAttempt, where Cora turns from likeable space-tyke to hallway girl from The Shin…
